Well, winter appears to be over. Have you ever experienced so much rain! The devastating floods seem to be a distant memory, but of course, those people whose homes were affected are still clearing up and counting the cost. Myself included when a bedroom waterlogged ceiling came down!

Now, as the sun starts to shine we start to think of summer and holidays, BBQ`s, Gardening and Day trips out.

Talking of which……….your committee are organising a day trip out to Windsor Castle by coach and which will also include a Riverboat ride along the Thames.

Past Events

Since my last Newsletter issued in December we have enjoyed interesting Speakers at the Members Evenings held at the Heritage Centre on the second Thursday of each month. My thanks to Ian Lucking for arranging such a cross- section of fascinating subjects. For example :-

Private Detective Agency

Wildlife in Zimbabwe

Portrait Photography

Ancient Egypt

Quiz Night

Thanks go to the Committee Members who help to make these evenings a success by helping with the refreshments, door entrance, raffle and venue etc.

Our speaker at the January Members evening, Ian Cross, who talked about his work at the private detective agency very kindly donated his fee to a charity of our choice. This was discussed and sent to Julia`a House. A letter of thanks has been received from them.

The weekend of 2nd May saw the departure of the Excursion to Rouen to view Monet`s garden. Unfortunately I could not go myself but have heard from many of those who attended and they had a thoroughly enjoyable time.

Thanks go to Terry Bright for his hard work in organising the trip and making it a success and enjoyable for everyone.

Press Coverage

Our Press officer on the committee is Sheila Hollingworth. She has been giving accounts of our Members evenings and forthcoming events to the local media. Recently she was invited into the studios of Forest FM to be interviewed about the Town Twinning Association. Sheila fully expected the interview to be recorded and edited but on arrival she quickly learnt that it would be broadcast live! She did a splendid job and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Well done Sheila.

What`s On

The Members Evenings have been extended to run through the summer (with the exception of August) to include a variety of speakers

The next Members Evening is scheduled for Thursday 12th June when a speaker from the Dorset Wildlife Trust will talk about Brownsea Island.

On Monday 7th July a coach excursion is planned to visit Windsor Castle and a riverboat trip along the Thames. A few places are currently still available.

The July Members Evening is scheduled for 10th July when the past Mayor of Verwood Peter Richardson will be giving a talk on his experiences as a councillor and as Mayor. He will tell of the fascinating places that he has visited over the past year. Thanks go to Peter as he has been an active member of the Town Twinning committee within his role as Honorary President of the Association.

The Verwood Concert Brass are holding a Fete on the Recreation Ground on 12th July and have asked lots of local organisations to participate by having a stall on the day. We will be getting involved but the type of stall we have is yet to be decided.

August sees us back at the Rotary Rustic Fayre on the Bank Holiday Monday 25th with the usual Café Rene. Come and say hello and enjoy a glass of wine or tea and coffee.

An official invitation was received from our Twinning friends in Champtoceaux to visit for the weekend of August 27th until 1st September 2014. Many Members have booked to go on this trip and it is kindly being organised by Joyce Timpson.

A Barn Dance to be held on Saturday 11th October at the Memorial Hall is currently being organised so put the date in your diaries to be able to enjoy a fun evening. Details will follow later in the year.

Summer Tips

Many of you will be now be thinking of holidays and perhaps crossing the channel to Europe. If so, then our committee members John and Julie are in the Brittany Ferries travel club and are able to offer discounts on cross-channel ferries. Please contact them on email for details and offers.

Hiring a car whilst on holiday? Watch out for the added excess insurance (typically £5 to £10 per day extra) when collecting your car. Excess payments can be payable and are usually £1000 to £1500. When you hire a car, the car hire company will normally include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft cover. This policy will come with what’s known as an excess, or the charge you’ll have to pay if your rental vehicle gets damaged or stolen. For example, let’s say you’ve hired a car and your excess is £1,500. You’re involved in an accident that causes £5,000 worth of damage to your hire car. In this case, you’d have to pay your car hire company £1,500 – even if the accident wasn’t your fault.

The alternative is to take out excess insurance here in the UK for about £40 per annum. This can be arranged through the following providers:-

It could save you a lot of money.

I hope you have enjoyed my second newsletter. Feel free to pass it on to friends, family and neighbours as we are always looking for new members to join us. All that is left is to wish you all a good summer.

Clive Grove, Chairman
