Well, a new look newsletter and a new Chairman! At the AGM in October Terry Bright handed over the Chairmanship to myself after ‘reigning’ for six years. Our thanks and gratitude go to Terry for such hard work in leading the Association. (Terry has kindly agreed to continue organising the weekend breaks for the coming year.)

Terry was presented with a gift and Certificate of achievement along with flowers to his wife Angie for her support.

The AGM saw Alec Nicholls accepting the proposal to become Vice Chairman and also the welcome return of Julie and John to the committee after living in France for some while.

Past Events

Sunday 10th November was Remembrance day which saw a large crowd gather at the Memorial on Ferret Green to honour the fallen in past conflicts. Over 120 young scouts and guides attended the service and marched from the church to the memorial. I had the honour of laying a wreath on behalf of our Association along with many other local community organisations. Sadly, it was the last year that the Army Petroleum Squadron 126 from West Moors will be represented as they are to be disbanded in the new year. They have supported the people of Verwood for many years on Remembrance Sunday.

The members evening meeting in November was addressed by Mr Roy Slade who gave an interesting talk on the life and works of Rudyard Kipling. The monthly meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Potters Wheel Heritage Centre, commencing 7.30pm. Refreshments are served and there is a raffle held. So, just turn up, be welcomed, meet new friends and have a social evening. Feel free to bring guests and who knows, they might like to join!

A great evening was enjoyed in November at the Country and Western Dance. The music was played and enjoyed by the band ‘Grand Canyon’ and a Hot Dog Supper served mid-way to enhance the evening. Thanks go to Carol Geary who took the lead role in organising the event and to all the committee members who supported her to make it a success.

During November a coach full of members and guests set off early on the Friday morning en-route to Amiens, France for a weekend of sightseeing and shopping. A thoroughly enjoyable trip was had by all and once again expertly organised by Terry Bright.

What’s On

Terry is also organising a short break to Rouen on 2nd to 5th May, 2014 which includes a visit to Monet’s house and garden. There are many other interesting things to see and do in Rouen so contact Terry Bright for details on 01202 822959 if it appeals to you. Bookings are taken on a first come first served basis.

The next monthly Members Evening will take place on Thursday 9th January 2014 at the Potters Wheel Heritage Centre, commencing 7.30 pm.

A representative from a private detective agency will be the evening’s Speaker giving an insight into a little known industry.

Winter Tips

Winter is approaching and as the temperature drops, it's important for older adults to prepare for the potential risks that cold weather can bring.

For the thousands of seniors living in the area, winter may pose a number of risks. Reports have shown much higher incidences of injury and illness due to icy pavements, cold and dry air, flu viruses and in some cases, hypothermia.

bullet

When going outdoors, remember to dress warmly. Wear layered, loose-fitting clothing and mittens. When possible, wear a hat to protect against heat loss since close to half of all body heat is lost through the head.

bullet

Cold weather can put extra strain on the heart. When doing winter chores such as shoveling snow, do some warm-up exercises first and take many breaks.

bullet

To avoid slips and falls, wear non-skid boots or other shoes with plenty of traction.

bullet

Flu is a highly infectious illness that spreads rapidly through the coughs and sneezes of people who are carrying the virus. If you're at risk of complications from flu, make sure you have your annual flu vaccine.

I hope you have enjoyed my first newsletter. Feel free to pass it on to friends, family and neighbours as we are always looking for new members to join us. All that is left is to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year. I look forward to seeing you in 2014.

Clive Grove, Chairman

H

ello and welcome to what will be my last newsletter as your Chairman. I must say I have enjoyed the last 6 years and you haven’t heard the last of me yet! Although I will be stepping down from the Committee for the time being, I have agreed to continue organising the annual long weekend breaks when your new committee asks. And, of course, I will continue to be an active and enthusiastic “twinner”. After the AGM I will be running one of my popular “Quizgo” games.

Do come along to the AGM if you possibly can to show your support for Clive Grove, the incoming Chairman. A formal notice of time and place is further down this newsletter.

Hand in hand with the AGM of course come membership renewals. Your local committee representative will be calling on you soon to collect and offer you a new membership card. Or, even better, you can pre-empt this by coming to the AGM and paying there.

One final plea. If you are on email and are still receiving this newsletter on paper, please would you let me have your email address so we can get it to you cheaper and quicker. Just email your address to twinning@verwood.org and I’ll do the rest. Also, if you have changed your email address, please let me know.

M

embers’ meetings. The new season of Members’ Meetings started on Thursday 12th September at 7.30pm in our new venue, the Heathland Heritage Centre. A record number of members attended to hear Jacqui and Louisa from Plane cuisine talk about their life and times as customer service managers at Heathrow terminals 4 and 5. Everybody joined in the interactive evening and it was great entertainment. Due to a clash of bookings, our next Members’ meeting will be on Wednesday 9th October and not the Thursday as previously advised. Do come along and meet the alpacas.

The November meeting will revert to Thursday - the 14th starting at 7.30pm, with a talk from Roy Slade on the subject of Rudyard Kipling.

======

P

Previous events. Sadly, this year’s summer outing boat trip to Wareham had to be cancelled due to lack of support. Your committee is putting on its thinking caps to try to come up with an appealing idea for next summer.

The visit to Liederbach in June was a success, and our party was presented with an original painting of a Liederbach landmark which is currently being restored to its former greatness. This will be available for all to view at the AGM and will be on display with a suitable plaque in the Town Council Help Centre.

Café René at the Rustic Fayre was another success. Our cost-cutting measures this year really paid dividends and made this a worthwhile event, both in terms of publicising the Twinning and in the return for our funds.

Notice of 32nd Annual General Meeting

This year’s AGM will be held at
7.30pm on Thursday 31
st October
in the Town Council Chamber, Vicarage Road.

Please let the secretary have your nominations for anyone willing to join the committee by 24th October.

Formal business will be followed by light refreshments and a fun quiz

======

Boules practice this year was poorly attended, despite the re-opening of what is now The Hideaway, which meant we could turn these evenings into real social events. Once again, your committee is considering ways of making this more attractive, including moving the day of the week or perhaps holding it in the afternoon instead of the evenings. Watch this space.

S

ubscriptions. It’s that time of year again! Subscriptions for 2013/14 are now due and for the 7th year running they have been held at £5. You can pay at the AGM, the October Members’ meeting or you can give it to any Committee member. In exchange you will receive a brand new membership card. Not much has stayed the same price since 2006 so take advantage while stocks last!

T

his edition of the Newsletter is a little different in format. I’m cutting down on my introductory waffle and briefly summarising the events of the past 3 months, then looking forward to the next three months or so, including news of our summer outing. I’d also like to welcome our new Secretary, Carol Geary, to the committee and I hope she has as enjoyable a time as I have been having!

So, enough from me, let’s have a look at what has been going on.

======

P

ast events. The final members’ meeting of the 2012/13 season included a fascinating talk by Stuart Gillespie on Great Entertainers. Stuart took us on a journey through his childhood and early career in showbusiness and introduced us (or re-introduced some of us!) to some of the early greats of Music Hall and Radio - or should I say wireless!

 On 23rd March, our Caribbean evening brought a welcome taste of tropical sunshine to a rather chilly Verwood. The Steel Band had travelled from Birmingham and had to dig their vehicles out of the snow before they could get away! A very enjoyable evening.

 The boules season has in theory just started, but with the visit from our friends from Champtoceaux rather pre-occupying us, the start has been delayed. With a bit of decent weather, we hope to make a start next Thursday (as I write this).

======

F

uture events. This year’s Summer Outing sees the return of a popular trip that we haven’t done for a few years now. On Saturday 20th July, the coach will leave Verwood at 5.30pm for Poole where we take a boat trip to Wareham, with an hour free time and a fish and chips supper on the return voyage. Arrive back in Verwood at approx 10.45pm. Cost is £25 per head. We need to get a minimum number of people signed up for this trip to go ahead, so would everyone please give Brian or Barbara a call on 01202 822299 to let them know you’re interested.

 Don’t forget that we will again be running Café René at the Rotary Rustic Fayre in Potterne Park on August Bank Holiday Monday, the 26th. Do drop by for a lunch, tea and a cake or just to renew your membership!!

 A reminder that the next season of Members’ meetings will start on Thursday 12th September at 7.30pm in St Michael’s Parish Hall. Full details of the programme will follow.

 Our Christmas Markets trip this year is to Amiens, from 29th November to 1st December. The cost is £160 per person. At the time of writing just 5 seats remain, so if you’re interested phone Terry on 01202 822959 soon!

 Visit from Champtoceaux

A full report on the visit is available on our website, (twinning.verwood.org) but here is a photo-summary.

P1010324.JPG

On arrival, (Wednesday afternoon) our guests were greeted at The Hideaway, who provided a very tasty typically British welcome of afternoon tea and cakes.

On Thursday we took them to Milestones museum at Basingstoke - a suitably weather-proof venue...

Followed by a superb ploughman’s buffet lunch at Basingstoke Golf Club

Then, after spending Friday and Saturday morning en famille we held the soiree at Crane Valley Golf Club

Where we were presented with a beautiful pastel picture, which is on display in the public enquiry office at Verwood Council Offices

And finally we waved our friend au revoir on Sunday morning
